Past Event: A rare visit to New House and its garden, Shipton-under-Wychwood

SOLD OUT

By kind permission of Mr Milton Grundy

New House shares a similar ethos to Turn End where houses and gardens are closely connected.  New House (1963-4) and Turn End (1964-7) are the only two post-war house and garden projects listed by Historic England. Both modern village houses, sympathetic to local vernacular and building traditions, are noted for their integration of building and landscape.

New House was designed as a weekend home by Roy Stout and Patrick Litchfield, specialists in private houses. This seminal and innovative design of five linked pavilions with a rotational symmetry, each unit with a mono-pitch roof and separate views of the garden, established the architects’ career. Stout and Litchfield envisaged a pool surrounding the house, but the creation of a Japanese garden was inspired by a visit to Kyoto by Milton Grundy with the painter Viacheslav Atroshenko.  A team of Japanese gardeners led by Mr Kasamoto was commissioned to create a large, sinuous pool and a roofed Cotswold stone wall beside the house to enclose a raked gravel garden. The garden design was completed by Atroshenko and planted by him and Milton Grundy in 1964-5.

The morning includes an introduction and tour of the house and its garden by owner Milton Grundy.  Lunch is available from The Wychwood Inn (not included in ticket price).  Proceeds to the Milton Grundy Foundation which supports concerts given by music students embarking on a musical profession.
